Brawndo: The Review

It's got electrolytes, it's what plants crave! Plus it's damn tasty

In December of last year we were introduced to Brawndo: The Thirst Mutilator, which is what plants crave, not water, like from a toilet. If the last sentence didn’t make any sense to you then the realization that Brawndo is a real, live energy drink is certainly lost.

The drink originally appeared in the Mike Judge comedy Idiocracy delayed indefinitely by 20th Century Fox and originally shuffled out on DVD in early 2007 to try and cash in some money in return for the costs. While the mishandling of the feature film is a story for another time, one of the many products that spawned from the movie (and plays an integral plot role) is Brawndo a drink the entire world (plants included) are forced to live off of.

Brawndo, at one time, was featured in Maxim Magazine’s “10 Movie Products we Wish We Had” and thanks to the kind folks at Redux Beverages, Brawndo is a reality, and a tasty one at that.

As a long time Red Bull and Jolt aficionado I was eager to try out the new product, which isn’t yet available in the retail market. The product comes in a 16 oz. (473 ml) can colored in a sickly yellow and proudly displaying its movie heritage.

Brawndo’s got electrolytes, and that’s what plants crave. Brawndo also has 200mg of Sodium, 22mg of Potassium, and 25% of the recommended daily dose of vitamins B6, B12, and C, as well as 200mg of caffeine (usually the best part). The lemon-lime flavored drink is best described as a cross between lemon-lime Gatorade (already a tasty beverage) and Coca-Cola’s long deceased citrus drink, Citra.

While advertising and marketing it as a energy drink/hydrator seems a bit odd, the stuff really works. The cans sent to us by Redux were put to good use keeping us up for late night deadlines and the empty cans on our desks have been a nice conversation piece as many people missed Idiocracy and decided to see the film to see what we were going all crazy about. They say it’s just a drink, we think it’s much, much more than that.
