Interview - Runner Runner

We chat with the super group about touring, downtime, and crazy road antics

Guitarist Nick Bailey from up-and-coming pop/punk super-group Runner Runner took some time out of his busy day to give us some answers to some pressing questions.

With more than eight-million total plays on its MySpace page - not bad for a new band - and named a 2009 Band to Watch by Alternative Press, Runner Runner has been described by one impressed industry veteran as a poppier Green Day. They've also drawn comparisons to Boys Like Girls, The Maine, Forever the Sickest Kids and We the Kings.

Just to get this out of the way first, where did the name “Runner Runner” come from?

Runner Runner is a poker term. It means against the odds. If you are behind in your hand and if the last two cards come out in your favor to win the hand...you just went runner runner. We hope to beat the odds. We are also all really fast runners :)

You guys assembled from a variety of different bands, looking at the industry now and how it was when you entered the scene, what’s the biggest change?

Think it’s all in the perspective. When we first started playing music it was to get out there, see some new towns and play with bands we grew up listening to. That still exists to some degree but on a much bigger level. Now we want to write music that hopefully people will hear and enjoy. We love what we do and want the world to hear our story. The change is in us, we feel more excited than ever to be writing and performing songs...it’s a dream come true to be here and we can’t wait for you to hear the new record. I’ve never been as excited about music as I am now, and it feels great!

What bands did you guys listen to as kids; do you think you're culling inspiration from them today in your music?

We grew up listening to classics like The Cars, Elvis Costello, Cheap Trick, Tom Petty, the list goes on and on. We definitely have been inspired by these amazing groups in our songwriting. For instance, "Hey Alli" is a tribute to one of our favorite Elvis Costello songs "Allison." You gotta learn from your roots, it’s the best way to be!

How do you feel about being described as a “…poppier Green Day?”

Wow what a compliment! We LOVE Green Day! If we could be like Green Day meets Cheap Trick, that’s like the biggest compliment ever!!! Thanks for the kind words I’m still blushing! Having us in the same sentence as them is beyond words.

What's it like on tour for you guys? What do you like to do in-between hoping from city to city?

Tour with RR is a party and everyone needs to come experience it! We love to laugh everyday and put on a show for everyone that comes to see us! In between cities we like to interact with the fans...go online on our social network sites and take calls on our SayNow phone number (714-646-4692). We live and breathe our band so between playing jokes on each other, listening to loud music and talking to our friends and fans, the day is just not long enough ;)

What’s the craziest thing you’ve seen on tour?

Craziest thing I’ve seen on tour is Sean P from White Tie Affair eat a raw egg after cracking it open on his teeth!!! EWWWW gross!!! That and Ryan taking the chicken nugget challenge at Chick-Fil-A and eating like 30 nuggets...he is still trying to work it off...HA!

A lot of bands found a whole new audience via Guitar Hero and Rock Band with its weekly downloadable songs would you like to see some of your stuff available in those games?

Heck yea! Can’t wait to play guitar hero to Runner Runner! That will be so amazing if we get so lucky! I challenge you to a guitar off! Who's gonna win?

Have you guys had a chance to meet David Letterman? (Editor's Note, the band is signed to Clear Entertainment/C.E. Music (a new label formed by David Letterman’s Worldwide Pants Inc.).

We have not met David yet but we can’t wait to! We have always loved his show and to be on his label, Wow!!! We wanna earn out stripes, but we can’t wait to play his show!!!!

Finally, what should fans take away from this debut album?

We want fans to have a musical journey with our record. We hope you will dance, cry and love. We tried to write something for everyone and hope you feel it too! Please let us know!!!

Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions!

Thank you, this is a dream come true! Come see us on tour!!!

We'd like to thank Nick for taking the time to answer our questions. You can purchase their single "So Obvious" right here, or check otu the band's MySpace or Official Pages as well.
